I
see the role of a Directory of Photography as a collaborative one
and gain great satisfaction from helping to bring high quality
projects to the screen. This requires me to bring a strong photographic
team to each project I work on and to quickly tune into the Director's
needs and vision, to deliver a photographic approach that suits
the project's specific requirements. The basic philosophy I have
is to deliver shots that reveal the story — Hemingway's
advice that you should “kill all your darlings” is
just as applicable to film as it is to words.
I hope that you
have already had the opportunity to look at some of my work on
the site. If you have, you will have seen that over the past
twelve years I have gained significant experience on film and
digital based dramas, documentaries, commercials and promos.
This has enabled me to develop a real confidence in my ability
to use light, composition and lens selection to achieve shots
that are as subtle or as stark as the story demands. I have also
gained an assurance in moving between fixed and hand-held camera
operating to enable appropriate levels of intensity or movement
to be captured. Both Home (Quicktime
movie / 12 Mb / 1 min 59 sec), and Birthday (Quicktime
movie / 9.6 Mb / 1 min 35 sec) show this particularly well. While
the Herald
Commercials (Quicktime movie / 18.8 Mb / 3 min 25 sec) demonstrate
the use of framing and lens selection to capture the emotion/mood
of a character or scene and give them a clear sense of both place
and space.
I am based in Edinburgh, which is a great place to
live. From this base, I have worked all over the UK as well as
North America and North Africa. I have really enjoyed the range
of work I have been involved in, whether this has been for independent
companies or broadcasters including the BBC, Granada and Channel
Four. If you have a project you would like me to become involved
in please get in touch. |
